Dedicated endpoint characteristics

Use this type of endpoint if you want to use a dedicated serial line to connect to the remote host. As both ends use the same type of endpoint, the link is referred to as a ``dedicated link''. Either the local or remote host can initiate the link. Examples of such lines include a leased line between buildings or a serial cable connecting two machines.

A link established to or from this type of endpoint has the following characteristics:

  • it requires a dedicated non-modem-control serial line (such as /dev/tty1a) connected to a single remote host

  • either the local host or the remote host must be able to specify the IP addresses that identify them
