Chapter 9, Configuring the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)

SCO PPP features

SCO PPP features

This release of SCO PPP provides:

  • Support for up to 64, simultaneous PPP links.

  • Support for PPP communications initiated on the local host and PPP communications initiated from a remote host.

  • Use of serial lines dedicated to a single PPP link or use of serial lines on an as-needed basis (dynamic acquisition) allowing for the sharing of serial lines with cu and UUCP facilities.

  • Dynamic IP addressing. SCO PPP can be configured for the dynamic allocation of IP addresses during PPP negotiation. Either the local host or the remote host can allocate IP addresses.

  • IP address pooling. A remote access endpoint can assign IP addresses from a predefined pool of IP address pairs.

  • Dynamic PPP link configuration, which negates the need to relink the kernel or stop/restart TCP/IP to make changes to PPP link endpoints. Further information is contained in ``Signaling the PPP daemon''.

  • Two-level priority packet handling. The PPP driver implements a two-level priority scheme in the handling of packets. Given highest priority over other packets, but equal priority among themselves, are rlogin, telnet, and ftp packets. All other packets are handled as a lower priority.

  • Packet filtering. SCO PPP provides a mechanism for specifying what types of IP packets (for example, those carrying FTP data versus those carrying RIP data) will pass through a PPP network interface, bring up a PPP network interface, or reset the idle timer of a PPP network interface. For more information, see ``PPP packet filtering''.

  • PPP server and PPP gateway services. See ``PPP gateway'' and ``Complex PPP connection scenarios'' for more information.

  • Negotiation of link and IP parameters. For more information on negotiation, see ``PPP negotiation''.

  • Authentication of the local host by the remote and of the remote host by the local. SCO PPP supports 2 types of authentication: PAP and CHAP. For more information on authentication, see ``PPP authentication methods''.

  • Access to SCO PPP debugging information. SCO PPP logs debugging information about its own activity through syslog(SLIB). The amount of information logged is configurable. Information regarding PPP's use of UUCP services is also available by activating the logging of this information to the console. For details on debugging information, see ``Logging PPP information''.

  • PPP MIB support. SCO PPP responds to ioctl queries from the SNMP daemon for information regarding the objects in 2 PPP MIBs. For more information, see ``PPP MIB support''.

  • PPP now supports the use of drivers for smart third-party serial port devices that can perform the packetization and framing of data required by PPP. For details, see ``PPP support for smart serial port devices''.
